Chris Coons faces Michael Katz in Delaware Senate race

In Delaware, Republican challenger Michael Katz is looking to unseat Democratic incumbent and longtime Congressman, Chris Coons in the race for Senate.

Coons has served as Senator for the first state since 2010 and has racked up numerous accomplishments to tout over those years.

Coons grew up in Hockessin and he “carries Delaware with him every day in the Senate.”

Coons argues that he “fought back against Trump’s efforts to slash Medicaid and take affordable health care from thousands of Delawareans.”

Coons also said he has secured funding for “major developments” in the state’s future, including building affordable housing and protecting Delaware’s natural wonders.

For his part, Katz is “a physician, business owner, public servant, family man, and man of faith” — notes his road to becoming a Republican candidate did not follow a straight line.

He previously served as a State Senator in Delaware’s 4th State Senatorial District, where he was elected as a Democrat.

Along the way, his campaign site notes, Katz became “[c]oncerned about growing polarization and one-party rule in Delaware” and switched to the Independent Party when he ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Delaware in 2024.

Returning to run as a Republican for a U.S. Senate seat in this year’s election, Katz’s campaign site says he made the change because he had “always been guided by fiscal responsibility, limited government, personal accountability, and the belief that government should serve the people—not the other way around.”
